Hoof to blame? Tesco inquire

A NATIONAL supermarket who have a store in Selby, have issued an apology after traces of horse meat were found within some of its products.

It was revealed last week that Irish inspectors had found up to 30 per cent of horse meat within one product stocked by Tesco.

A spokesperson from Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) said there is no health risk associated but that there was also no reasonable explanation for such traces to be found.

The product in question was the store’s ‘Everyday Value Frozen Beef Burgers’.

It stressed it had “immediately withdrawn from sale all products in question”.

The company proceeded to release an apology through its website whilst also taking out full-page adverts in national newspapers.

The statement read: “We and our supplier have let you down and we apologise.

“So here’s our promise. We will find out exactly what happened and, when we do, we’ll come back and tell you.

“And we will work harder than ever with all our suppliers to make sure this never happens again.”

When the Selby Times contacted Tesco to enquire whether the Portholme Road store had stocked the product, the group refused to comment.
