Hook event boost for children in need
A WELL supported weekend of fun for all ages in Hook has boosted the coffers of a group which offers help to local children in need.
The Alastair Cameron Jones Foundation has sprung up from the tragedy of a fatal car crash on the village's Westfield Banks road in October 2006.
Alastair was one of two young men to die in the crash. The committee, made up of Alastair's close friends and family, formed the foundation prompted by their amazement at the 1,200 in donations which were collected at the funeral.
The foundation is now in its third year of fundraising and is proving to be a great success in the village.
"The weekend isn't just a fundraiser," said Peter Jones. "Our aim is to provide lots of free things to do, so the kids can have a really good time."
At the weekend, the Sotheron Arms pub in Hook, supported by landlord Jason Wimsey, staged a country and western night on the Saturday - featuring The Midnight Cowboys - and a fun day on the Sunday afternoon.
The fun day proved to be a great success with a large turnout across all age groups.
There were plenty of stalls and games including lucky dip, tombola, cake stand, and a free water slide. The bouncy slide proved the most popular attraction with the youngsters and even the adults got into the spirit with the dressing-up race and tug o' war!
The committee would like to thank everybody who showed their support to the event this year and are also very grateful to the following local businesses for their generous donations:
Sotheron Arms, Joanne Mahoney, Bobinda's, Goole Gas and Welding, Tesco, Digger land, Hull arena, Hull Truck Theatre, Dino star Experience and Marks and Spencer.
The group have so far carried out its efforts using the Goole High School as an interface, previously funding numerous projects including a trip to the European parliament, a youngster's charity cycle ride and much needed equipment for local groups.
The charity would like to invite requests for funding from local children's groups and individuals.
To be considered please e-mail info@theacjfoundation.co.uk with details of your request.
The group will know how much was raised at the weekend in a few weeks' time.
