Inside Justice Day at court

GOOLE Magistrate's Court will hold an Inside Justice Day next month to mark 100 years of youth justice.

The event, on Saturday October 18 from 10am to 3.30pm, will feature a variety of displays from several key departments including the emergency services, the Crown Prosecution Service and the Probation Service.

Neil Marquis, organiser of the event, said: "To commemorate the 100 years since youth courts opened, we will have two youth court sentencing hearings recreated; one set in 1908 and acted in full costume, and one set in the present day.

"We will ask the audience what they think the sentence will be, and they can vote using a hand-held device.

"These are real cases we will be using and an adult hearing will be carried out in the afternoon."

Visitors will also be able to visit the court and talk to magistrates, as well as look around a portable cell, provided by the Prison Me No-Way! Trust, to get the feel of living in prison.

Police will be bringing patrols and drugs dogs, as well as police horses, and a tour of police cells will also be available, as well as a report on deceased Beatle George Harrison's trial at Goole Magistrate's Court for dangerous driving.

Children will have the opportunity to take part in a plate painting competition based on the theme of justice. A judge will assess the best one.

The free event is part of Inside Justice Week 2008; a public campaign intended to enhance public awareness of how the justice system works by explaining how the process works and showing the roles of those involved.
