Jobs are under threat as firm plans Poland move
JOBS are set to be axed with the planned closure of a Goole factory next summer.
Vesuvius UK, which supplies refractory products and flow control systems to the steel, foundry and glass industries, is planning to move production from its Rawcliffe Road site to Poland next June.
The decision follows a wide ranging review to consolidate its UK slidegate and brick manufacturing and will also see the closure of its Worksop plant and cuts at its Derbyshire head office with a combined loss of 220 jobs.
Jack Anderson, managing director of Vesuvius UK, said: "This restructuring is necessary to ensure that Vesuvius maintains a strong European manufacturing base capable of competing in the global market, responding to the changing needs of our customers and maintaining our world leadership position.
"However, we fully recognise, and greatly regret, the impact that these proposed closures would have on our loyal staff, many of whom have worked for us for a long period of time.
"Every effort will be made to provide the affected employees with assistance, retraining and support in the search for alternative employment."
He added that the markets in which Goole operates are going through rapid changes in technology and operating practice.
As a consequence demands for higher performing and longer life products are resulting in lower volume.
A Vesuvius spokesman added: "These changes in volume, together with higher energy and operating costs, require Vesuvius to consolidate its European Slidegate operations.
"It is proposed to transfer the work currently carried out on the Goole site to our existing facility in Poland."
The closures would be achieved through a phased run down with production at Goole, which has a workforce of 114, stopping on June 30 2007.
A Goole employee said that Vesuvius bosses had informed them of the proposed closure on Tuesday.
Two representatives from the shopfloor were set to meet management yesterday as the Courier went to press.
Vesuvius will continue to employ in excess of 700 people in the UK, at sites in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, Newmilns, Ayrshire, and head office and R&D centre in Barlborough.
