Lights up for good cause
YOU DON’T have to go to the North Pole to see polar bears this Christmas!
Just drive through Church Fenton and you won’t be able to miss some of the amazing illuminations on display at a very special home.
For the past 16 years, Linda and George Barnard of Northfield Terrace have decorated their house with an array of Christmas lights and asked the community to make donations to a chosen charity when they stop to admire them.
This year, they have chosen to support Macmillan Cancer Support because the lives of many people in the village have been affected by cancer in the last year.
Linda says that they have had lots of interested viewers over the years.
She said: “We usually get a good reception from people that walk past, and just the other day there were eight of the Sherburn Lions discussing the lights outside.”
The couple invited the local representative from Macmillan, Clara White, along to do the honours of turning on the lights last month.
After flicking the switch, Clara said: “It was a pleasure to turn on these amazing lights. We are so delighted that they have chosen to support Macmillan this year.
“Macmillan nurses are there for people living with cancer every step of the way; giving vital medical, practical and emotional support from the day of their diagnosis and right through their treatment.
Last year our nurses reached over 430,000 people, but our services are stretched and we can’t currently reach the growing number of people living with cancer. That is why the support of people like Linda and George is so important.
“Every penny they collect from their Christmas lights will make a massive difference.”Linda says that George devotes alot of time to setting up the lights. She added: “It takes him about a week to put them all up, and they usually stay up until early January.”
Linda added that George usually takes about a week to put up all the lights but said “it’s worth it for the money we raise for good causes.”
The couple raised £250 last year when supporting Air Ambulances, and are hoping to equal or even better that tally this time around.
