SHERBURN actress Shirley Hoyland is preparing to bare nearly all at Leeds theatre The Carriageworks next week in the Cosmopolitan Players’ production of Calendar Girls.

The production is raising funds for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

Set in a small North Yorkshire village, Calendar Girls tells the story of a group of very gutsy but ordinary women, all member of the Women’s Institute, who cause a global phenomenon by persuading one another to pose for a charity calendar with a difference – they are nude!

Shirley said: “I suppose I am being a bit brave appearing on stage with nothing on and I am a bit nervous about my fellow actresses dropping the props that protect my modesty, but you’ve got to trust your fellow actresses haven’t you!”

Shirley (pictured) is a seasoned amateur stage performer, and her role in Calendar Girls is a marked contrast to the last stage part she took on.

She said: “The last thing I did was The Sound of Music in June and I played the Mother Abbess – so this really is a bit of a change! But I’m really looking forward to it – there’s a great spirit amongst the cast.” Bryan Craven, director of the Cosmopolitan Players’ production, believes that some groups are missing the whole point of the play by casting the girls far too young and aiming for them to have perfect figures.

He said: “The gist of the play is that these women are middle aged with all the usual lumps and bumps that ladies of that age have. They are not photographic models and that’s why what the original Calendar Girls did was so ground breaking.

“In the script Annie’s husband, who sets the idea in motion refers to the last phase of womanhood as always being “the most glorious” and that’s what my Calendar Girls, and I am sure they won’t mind me saying it, are fast approaching.”

Calendar Girls takes to the stage at The Carriageworks from Wednesday October 17 to Sunday October 21. For bookings contact 0113 2243801.
