Man’s sexual offence charges

A 52-YEAR-OLD Selby man appeared before magistrates last Thursday (February 7) facing eleven charges relating to alleged sexual activity with a young teenage girl.
Jonathan Haigh, of Larch Way, who faces three charges of indecent assault, six of gross indecency and two of inciting a girl to commit an act of gross indecency - all allegedly against the same girl when she was under the age of 14 - appeared before the town’s magistrates expecting to be committed to crown court.
However, Jane Chadwick, prosecuting, told the court that the paperwork for the offences, allegedly committed between January 1992 and December 1995, was not ready for the committal because of missing items from the police.
Keith Haggerty, defending, said that, although the Crown Prosecution Service had had three months since the charges were brought against Haigh to get their act together, he was not on this occasion objecting to a further adjournment.
However, he added that if the case was not ready at the next hearing he would be making a “strong” application that the charges against his client be discharged.
The cases were adjourned until February 28.
The court readmitted Haigh to unconditional bail.
