Model makers exterminate the opposition with Dalek

A RENOWNED Goole model maker is hoping to turn his hobby into a career.

George Brown (49) of Jefferson Street impressed judges with a remote-controlled Dalek at the recent Hobbies Exhibition where he and his nine-year-old protg daughter Bethany scooped best stall.

Mr Brown said they were thrilled to be awarded the trophy at the annual event.

"Like me, Bethany loves making things ; at school when all the other children are using pencils and crayons she's asking for pipe cleaners and glue to make things," he added.

The victory marks the start of a successful year for the model maker, whose previous creations include a six feet tall pylon out of 20,000 matchstick's and a two-foot tall and nine-foot long model of the Humber Bridge that he is currently working on.

Mr Brown says he has been approached about featuring his models on a billboard campaign on recycling and the Fire service have shown interest in running a don't play with matches campaign featuring his matchstick creations.

Mr Brown also has an historical project in the pipeline after he was approached by members of the Barns Wallis Society to recreate a portable version of the bouncing bomb, used in World War II and designed by aviation engineer Sir Barnes Wallis whose R100 airship was built in Howden.

"It's something I'm getting really excited about. I'm really interested in history.

"It's not signed and sealed but I have said I would be interested in getting involved."

And the self-employed handy man, is now hoping his model making could become a full-time career.

"I would like to think I can do this full time in the future but I'm just enjoying this while it lasts because I know that the bubble could burst at any time "
