A MOUTHWATERING Chinese meal was the highlight of the day when pupils at Saxton Primary School celebrated Chinese New Year.
The school has explored a number of cultures throughout the year including Nigerian and Indian and the Far East was the latest to come under the microscope.
Head teacher Monica Good said the authentic Chinese goodies made in the school kitchen went down a treat.
She added: “The children were very keen on this and they get a lot out of it. We have a creative curriculum in school and as part of our personal, social, health and citizenship education (PSHCE) scheme, whatever festivals from different parts of the world occur we study them. This furnishes the children with good life skills.”
She said the theme for this school year’s cultural studies had been discovery and inventions and areas such as the invention of Chinese fireworks had been looked at. Mrs Good added: “We are always looking at ways to integrate our studies of different cultures into the curriculum. So we would relate Chinese culture for example into our maths, language, art and other lessons.
“Apart from studying everything to do with China we have also included news of this in our newsletter. This is something we are always keen on – to get to know people from other lands.”
