WEARY visitors to Snaith can rest easy and take in the views after town centre groups clubbed together to buy new public benches.

Coun John Barrett joined Snaith and Cowick Town councillor Rob McArthur, who originally put the idea forward to his council for new seating in Snaith Town centre. It was decided to place three down the side of Butter Market, outside the fire station near Snaith Priory. The council told residents that anyone could donate and pay for a seat.

Each bench was donated by separate parties – Snaith and Cowick Pinderfield and Town Institute charity, the Womens Institute along with Snaith and District Gadabouts and a contribution from Coun John Barrett’s former mayor’s charity. A plaque for each bench has also been paid for from Coun Greta Laughton’s mayor’s charity.

Coun John Barrett (pictured with Robert McArthur, Ken Hird, Margaret Bonser, Greta Laughton), said: “ I would like to thank Coun McArthur for coming up with this idea. Due to the work this council has been doing on tourism it is just what is required. I felt residents would be happy for me to pay for a bench from my former mayor’s charity.”

Snaith and Cowick Town Council is keen to hear from anyone who may wish to donate a bench for any person. Each costs less than £400 and could be sighted along the Heritage Walks. Call them on 01405 869668.
