“A GUIDE for Families - Breasfeeding in Selby district” was launched in the town last Thursday at the Breastfeeding Cafe at Selby Methodist Church.
Breastfeeding rates in Selby for babies who are ten days old and six to eight weeks are below both the North Yorkshire and national average, explained Children’s Centre Services Manager (Selby North) Janina Macheta, adding: “Local people wanted to do something about this.”
The idea for a local guide came from a planning day held last March for families to talk to professionals about what they think would support more Selby families to breastfeed for longer. The guide was put together by Selby families working with practitioners from children’s centres, health visitors, midwives and the voluntary sector, and has information on support groups in the area, national helpline numbers, tips on breastfeeding out and about and back at work/study, and some myth-busters about breastfeeding.
Copies can be collected from local midwives, health visitors or local children’s centre.
