New play area will keep the kids fit
LUCKY pupils at Carlton Primary School are aiming to become fighting fit after completion of their new play area.
The Local Education Authority funded equipment was completed recently to turn a barren area into playtime paradise.
Deputy headteacher Tina Clarke said the new area consisted of an upgraded wildlife garden, a fenced-off quiet area, an adventure trail, swings, climbing frame, a stage and a dipping platform for the pond.
She added: "The children are thrilled with this. It has been built from scratch incorporating ideas from the pupils. We wanted to cater for all children and I think this has been achieved.
"The stage we now have means when we have a garden party the school choir and dance class can perform on it in line with us now doing a lot more drama."
The active pupils were also introduced to a new sport last week when hockey coach Bob Maltby from York put them through their paces.
Year four teacher Paul Merrall joined the hockey coach and school PE co-ordinator Karen Longfield for a knock about and fitness session at the start of a five-week programme.
Paul said: "The children have absolutely loved this. It became the highlight of their week.
"This is part of the Selby Schools' Partnership and introduces youngsters to different activities.
"Once the five-week programme is finished we will take part in an inter-schools hockey tournament."
