New year brings change at school
GOOLE'S secondary school will be having a dramatic reorganisation to take it forward into the new school year.
Vermuyden School - a maths and computing college - will be changing its name to Goole High School from September.
The secondary will also be undergoing other dramatic changes, including a new school uniform next year.
Celebrating its centenary this year, the change is a bid to revert the name to how it used to be, and to take it into the new year.
John Niland, assistant headteacher at the school, said: "There has been popular demand from many people that Goole should be in the title of the school.
"A lot of the community have asked why it is called Vermuyden, also if we have Goole in the title it adds the community link."
Originally named the Goole Secondary School when opened in 1909, then Goole Grammar School, this title was later scrapped to Vermuyden School in the early nineties after new government plans.
Now parents, governors and the community have expressed interest in including the town name in the secondary school's title.
John added: "The school celebrates its' centenary this year, so it has been decided to change it now.
"Governors, and parents have been informed and have been asked for their opinions.
"It is also giving the feeling we are moving forward."
The school is also going to change its school uniform from t-shirts and jumpers to shirts, blazers and ties.
And colour scheme will also change, with gold and black becoming the main colours of the school, which was the case in 1909.
The school will be led through the new change by headteacher Danuta Tomasz, who was appointed last September.
As one of the top ten secondary schools in the East Riding, the school received a 'good' inspection from Ofsted inspectors in January.
