No worries over career advice for Selby youngsters

Heads of schools and colleges in the Selby area have moved to allay fears over careers advice for young people.

Recent government changes with regards to funding has led to schools and colleges having to hand out advice internally.

Connexions, the service that predominantly advised young people on career options, has recently been revamped so that it only offers services over the phone and online.

The government has since set up National Careers Service which aims to aid schools with extra advice.

A joint statement, recently released by Selby College principal Allan Stewart and the heads of all Selby district schools, said: “At a time when young people face both more choice and more uncertainty, the responsibility for giving them honest and impartial advice about their future options has been handed over to headteachers.

“Maintained schools, academies, free schools, studio schools and colleges for 14-year olds, apprenticeships - these are the options which families need independent help to decide on.”

The statement also assured parents that “local secondary school heads remain committed to laying out all the options available” to pupils before they completed their GCSEs.
