Open house at Howden cottage made of straw
A CHARTERED accountant who turned her back on a successful career to follow her eco dream is holding an open day.
Farmer's wife Carol Atkinson, from Eastrington, spent 20 years as an accountant before following her heart and studying for the MSc in Advanced Energy and Environmental Studies that fuelled her ambition to build the UK's first and only straw bale holiday home.
Carol said: "Straw bales are a fantastic natural building material.
"They provide a high level of insulation that can significantly reduce the energy needed to heat or cool a building.
"When combined with plaster on both sides, straw bale walls are fireproof, vermin proof and airtight.
"The internal clay plaster moderates heat and humidity to provide a healthy, stable indoor environment."
Members of the public are invited to visit the house of straw at Village Farm, Brind, near Howden, between 10am and 7pm on April 11.
And Carol will be on hand to explain the highs and lows of the extraordinary build that is her 'Home Grown Home'.
Entry costs 1 and the proceeds will be shared between Eastrington Village Hall and Howden School Rock Challenge Fund.
Encouraged by the experience of her first build, Carol will shortly start work on a more ambitious project – a two bedroom, one-and-a-half storey holiday home.
