Pensioner taken to hospital
A PENSIONER who fell over on his 80th birthday is angered that he was taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary rather than to Goole.
Mr Harry Cressey, of Kingsway, says he regularly falls over thanks to an historic injury to his left leg but, as long as he has help to get to his feet again, is fine.
"On Saturday night, a couple of weeks ago, I had been out to the club celebrating my birthday and fell as I came into my living room," he said.
"I had left my front door open so I called out for help in case anyone was passing by.
"A nearby neighbour heard me and came to help and she insisted on calling an ambulance. When the crew came they said they were taking me to Doncaster Royal Infirmary. I told them I didn't want to go there but I had no choice in the matter."
After being given a bed at the DRI, Mr Cressey said he fell asleep and woke at 7am the next morning.
"I waited for some sort of attention and someone came and checked my blood pressure.
"It got to 10am and I was told an ambulance had been ordered to take me home. No-one told me anything, other than I was OK. The ambulance came at 11am and that was that."
He said it was ridiculous that Goole people were being taken to hospitals all over the region rather than to Goole.
"Instead of talking about the possibility of closing beds, they should be putting more in and expanding the services on offer there because Goole Hospital is far superior to the others."
A spokesman for Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust said: "We are sorry to hear that Mr Cressey is unhappy with the service he has received from Yorkshire Ambulance Service and would urge him to contact us directly to discuss his concerns.
"Ambulance crews are trained to assess a patient's condition and provide any necessary treatment at the scene. Depending on a patient's medical history and clinical condition, ambulance staff may then convey them to the nearest hospital with services appropriate for their needs."
They added that after assessing Mr Cressey it was decided Doncaster RI was the best place to take him for further medical attention.
