Picnic paradise

A RESTFUL riverside picnic area has been created by a community group after two years of hard volunteer work.
A community and leisure working group of Snaith and Cowick Together has created the amenity and picnic spot in Ferry Lane at the request of residents, who made their feelings known through the Snaith and Cowick Community Plan.
Leading Snaith councillor John Barrett said more than two thirds of those who had contributed to the survey had requested the picnic site.
He added: “The Community and Leisure Working Group worked tirelessly over the past two years to achieve this. The four picnic tables placed there have been made from recycled, environmentally friendly, vandal-proof material. This has been funded by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the picnic equipment was installed by J Murphy and Sons Ltd, free of charge.”
He said the equipment and area had already proved a big hit with local families, visitors, walkers and cyclists travelling through the area.
He further added: “The working group would like to thank Murphys, East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the Town Council for their help and support and hope that the area will be used and enjoyed by many members of the community. It is another attraction for visitors to Snaith.”
The site is a popular spot with the travelling community, who were last there on August 20, when Coun Barrett campaigned for their removal after he claims they swamped the area with rubbish.
On Monday night the Snaith and Cowick Town Council met to decide whether or not to fund the placement of one ton blocks of natural stone across the site entrance to stop vehicles parking up there and to try and prevent a recurrence of what happened with the travellers during their last visit.
Coun Barrett said: “I have been up at the site with the Environment Agency. We looked at the flood bank, which we feel could be damaged by travellers parking on it and letting their horses also walk about on it. I will present my findings to the town council.”
