He was told that bricklaying would begin this week and that the opening was still planned for July.
Ian revealed that the site was first viewed by Sir Ken Morrison back in 2001 when Ian met him in Goole to back a local campaign to bring another supermarket to the town.
"I had written to all the major supermarkets saying that there was a great opportunity to invest in the town and provide local competition to Tesco's," said Ian.
Most sent polite replies saying they had no investment plans but I was amazed when I got a personal reply from Sir Ken Morrison who offered to meet me in the town and see what we had to offer.
"He came and looked at various locations, including the former Timms site but at that time the company was looking for larger edge of town sites. However, he did say if that changed then they would consider us.
"Obviously it is good news that eventually they did take the decision to come to us and I am sure the store will prove to be a popular addition to the town.
"I hope that Sir Ken may come along to the opening and I thank him for his personal interest going back to 2001."
And plans to use the historic windmill on the supermarket site are set for approval this afternoon.
Members of the East Riding Planning Committee, which meets in Beverley today, are to be advised to approve the plans which include restoration of the Grade Two listed building.
Originally Morrisons had wanted to use the windmill as part of the overall retail space but say this was not commercially viable.
They now want to use the ground floor only for storage.
The Planning Officer commented in his report: "The restoration of the listed windmill is to be welcomed and will provide a historical focal point for the proposed adjacent retail development and for the town itself.
"The proposals are considered to preserve the special character and appearance of the building."
The windmill is to have sliding Yorkshire sash windows and most of the former alterations and repairs made in previous years, which officers deem to be inappropriate and unsightly, are to be removed as part of the restoration.
