THE concerned secretary of a Selby District rail users’ group said campaigners had stepped up their pressure on Northern Rail to sort out unnecessary car parking charges at South Milford station.
Reg French said he had written a comprehensive report on behalf of Selby and District Rail Users’ Group highlighting problems at the rural station including hefty fines imposed on those parking outside designated bays and lighting problems, which he had presented to Selby and Ainsty MP Nigel Adams.
Trouble flared at the station three weeks ago when commuters suddenly found themselves facing huge fines after parking there previously without problems.
Reg said: “Clearly there is a concern. However, as there is a large amount of building in the Sherburn and South Milford areas at the moment, SADRUG is asking Selby District Council if there is 106 development money available to create more parking bays at the station. There is land near there that could be turned quite easily into parking spaces.”
He said until the problem was sorted out Northern Rail’s policy of imposing fines for illegal parkers remained and he added: “This is a Northern Rail network policy and one of the arguments is that people park at stations for free before going shopping. Clearly this can’t be the case at South Milford as the station is miles away from any main shopping centre.
“I urge Northern Rail to re-think their policy or to provide more parking bays. Nigel Adams has my report and intends to speak with Northern Rail bosses soon.”
