BROADBAND: Superfast boradband coming to Uleskelf.

THE roll out of superfast broadband in North Yorkshire is surging ahead with Selby and Ainsty MP Nigel Adams aiming to make the region an Internet hotbed.

The latest village to plug into the Internet highway is Ulleskelf with a village pub earmarked as the centre of broadband operations.

The Ulleskelf Arms in the centre of the village is mixing pints with online cruising as it is plugged into the broadband highway and is becoming the pub at the hub.

The pub intends to have superfast broadband with speeds of five, ten or 50 Mbits per second depending on the package chosen. And the hostelry service will be provided by LN Communications.

The service was officially launched by Nigel Adams MP on Friday and he said he hoped it would help the pub customers and anyone using the service to get on the Internet highway.

The service uses a wireless link between Sherburn British Gypsum building and the Ulleskelf Arms – it is available to homes in and around Ulleskelf – which will connect via wireless link to the antennae on the roof of the pub. After Mr Adams had used the broadband on his iPhone he said: “This is really good for villagers. This is a great solution for them and enables them to get superfast broadband early and as it’s rolled out into the village via the receiver at the pub.

“The complete roll out of this programme in North Yorkshire is expected to cost in the region of £76 million. This would involve the installation of fibre optic cables and the replacement of the current green boxes.

“The reason for this is that fibre optic cable will have to be brought in from the telephone exchange into cabinet then contacted to homes from there.”

The broadband launch involved Phil Barnett Marstons Operations Director, Nigel Adams MP, Phil Beadnall, Commercial Director for LN Comms, and chief executive of NYNET/Superfast North Yorkshire John Moore (left).

Mr Adams added: “There will still be remote locations that will probably have to rely on wireless connections to get broadband.

“In Ulleskelf the pub is the ideal location to have this service.”

Prior to this broadband was either slow or unavailable.
