Raise funds for cancer cause
CHARITY TREK: Johnny Buckland is taking part in another charity trek as part of a 30-strong group.
A charity evening takes place tonight to help raise funds for the Michelle Henderson Cervical Cancer Trust.
The trust was set up to honour Michelle Henderson and raise vital cash for the Trust named after her. Michelle was the daughter of famous Scottish football star Willie Henderson – a well known player for Glasgow Rangers in the 1970s who died of cervical cancer on October 1 last year, the date of her 27th birthday.
Man and wife team Johnny and Sally-Ann Buckland will host the fund-raising night at The Ranch holiday park and promise a night of fund-raising fun from 7.30pm.
Johnny, who helped to raise thousands of pounds for a Motor Neurone disease charity with a trek across the Gobi desert two years ago, said he formed a strong friendship with Willie who went on the trek with him.
He said: “As soon as I found out Willie’s daughter was ill I decided to help raise money for this important cause. This will be followed by a jungle trek in Indonesia in May with myself, Willie, my wife and 27 others aiming to raise funds in Michelle’s memory.”
He added: “We’ll be setting off on our charity trail on May 4 and we urge as many people as possible to help raise thousands of pounds. When I went across the Gobi desert with Willie and many others it helped to form a close bond between us. It was also great to play the Mongolian national football team at the end of that trek and score a goal in the country’s national stadium. There are no plans to do anything similar this time.”
