Retiring Canon’s parting tipple
A RETIRING Snaith parish cleric got to toast his fond farewell in style with a special beer brewed in his honour.
Canon The Rev Cyril Roberts, 71, was delighted that his ‘local’ in Snaith, The Brewers’ Arms, was serving up the pint of blonde ale Canon’s Ball.
The tasty tipple was brewed by Snaith’s The Old Mill Brewery in recognition of Canon Roberts’ 26 years serving the communities of Snaith, Cowick, Gowdall, Pollington, High Eggborough, Hensall and Heck.
The grandfather-of-one said: “It was superb. It’s a really hoppy bitter and I really enjoyed it. I was lucky enough to help pull the first pint at the Brewers’ Arms when it first opened.
“They are even talking about putting Canon’s Ball in bottles.”
Canon Roberts, who is hoping to move to Carlton with his wife Enid, is looking forward to spending more time with his family
He started out his working life as a maths teacher, firstly in Cheshire and then at Leeds University. He started his time in the Selby area as team rector. He was made an honorary Canon of Sheffield Cathedral in 2005.
His time in Snaith has involved both happy and sad times – including the Gowdall floods and the Great Heck train tragedy, both of which drew the community together.
He added: “We’ve not really got any firm plans for retirement beyond doing what we can to help the community and the church, but we’ve got to know some fantastic people in our time here.”
