Road safety tops agenda for pupils

SAFETY was top of the agenda when 19 schools in the Selby district, including Sherburn, were put through their paces by the ‘seatbelt sherrif’ at Drax Power Station in an annual scheme to promote road safety.

A total of 40 children visited Drax Power over two days where they enjoyed a game of Road Safety Bingo, using road signs to match to their play cards and other safety games. However, the highlight was getting to meet the popular ‘seatbelt sheriff’ and swear an oath of allegiance to ‘always stay safe’ and ‘buckle up’ when travelling by car and bus or in any other vehicle.

This is the fifth year Drax has hosted the popular Junior Road Safety Officer Day, which gives pupils the chance to learn about safety techniques as part of the scheme, which is always organised by North Yorkshire County Council and sponsored by Drax Power Ltd.

The JRSO scheme gives two year five pupils from each participating school the responsibility to organise safety initiatives to encourage road safety and everything connected with it among their fellow pupils.

Ann Smallwood, of North Yorkshire County Council Road Safety and Travel Awareness body, took the children through what it means to be a JRSO, while members of the Drax health and safety team explained to the youngsters why safety is so important at Drax Power.

The fun-filled day was rounded off with a guided tour of the power station for the inquisitive children.

Ann Smallwood said: “The continued support of Drax has helped us to widen our road safety message across schools and promote safe behaviour when children are walking, cycling or in the car.”
