RSPCA launch investigation at Carlton equine centre

AN investigation into suspected animal cruelty has been launched at an equine centre in Carlton after RSPCA officers received an emergency call from a concerned member of the public.

RSPCA officers were alerted to problems at Bank End Equine Rescue in Hirst Road on Friday.

A spokeswoman for the organisation said: “The RSPCA has removed a horse from a property in Hirst Road, Carlton, because of concerns for its welfare.

“The horse was taken into possession by police on veterinary advice and placed in RSPCA care. Another horse was put to sleep by a vet after being called by the owner yesterday.

“We will be seeking to interview the owner of the horses in due course. No further information is available as our investigation is ongoing.”

Owner of the rescue centre Toni Veitch said she became concerned after her thoroughbred horses began to lose weight even though they were on good feed.

She added: “They were re-wormed and were still losing weight. I called the vet to one horse and he said it had a massive heart murmur and needed to be put to sleep. I rang the man who disposes of these horses and he told me to put a blanket over him for the time being as he could not get out immediately.

“I was not around the next morning as I had a new job to go to and when I went to the stables next evening RSPCA officers were there and said they were investigating me about the horse being starved to death.

“There has been a hate campaign on Facebook and pictures of the dead horse with the blanket removed.

“I have spoken to the rural affairs officer at Selby Police Station Sara Ward and she is looking into this.”
