YOUNGSTERS from local primary schools were able to try something new when the Sainsbury’s Wincanton depot invited them to a road safety day!

Year four and five pupils from Sherburn Hungate Primary and Saxton Primary visited the Bishopdyke Road depot to take part in five activities.

First up was ‘Egg Helmets’, which was no yolk as it demonstrated how important it is to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle, using eggs in a polystyrene helmet as a metaphor.

The site also oversaw two activities involving the dangers of HGVs on the road, and the children even got a ride in the vehicles.

North Yorkshire County Council provided the other two activities, the first based around being a safe pedestrian, using songs and rhymes to get the children to remember the Green Cross Code.

The other was based around wearing a seatbelt in a car and the consequences if it isn’t worn – a car with miniature figures was sent down a ramp with a crash at the bottom and the children observed what happened when a seatbelt was worn, and when it was not.

The children were provided with high visibility vests and a goody bag.

Darryl Jones, the transport training manager on the site, said: “We enjoyed it just as much as the children!

“Our team was running around getting high-fives from the children, which made it a really enjoyable day for everybody.

“Hopefully we can do this again because it was so successful and the children were engaged all day.”
