Scheme in Lottery finals

A COMMUNITY project that helps vulnerable young people who are either homeless or in danger of losing their home has won through to the finals of the National Lottery Awards.

Chances for Life, based at The Hinge in Goole, is a finalist in the Best Education Project category and now needs votes to help it win.

The Awards are the annual search to find the UK's favourite Lottery-funded projects and Chances for Life has to beat just two other finalists to win the title of the UK's Best Education Project. All have already received Lottery funding and the Awards celebrate how they used it.

Chances for Life offers advice, information and support to young people under the age of 26 who are homeless, threatened with homelessness, or who are vulnerable because of drug misuse, self-harming issues and social isolation. The project helps young people turn their lives around through a programme of workshops, life skills training, mentoring and one to one sessions.

Martin Crossland, from Chances for Life, says: "We are absolutely delighted to have made it to the final of The National Lottery Awards and want to thank everyone who has supported us so far.

"Lottery funding has made a real difference to our project, enabling us to reach even more young people at risk by helping us to increase the support that we can offer.

"We hope that the local community will now vote for us to win so that our staff and volunteers receive the recognition they deserve."

Public voting for the final ends at midday on Friday August 13. The public can vote for Chances for Life by calling 0844 686 4497 or going online to www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/awards

The winners of each category will be announced during a star-studded Awards event, broadcast on BBC1 in September and this year held at London's Roundhouse.

TAKING a break from filming for broadcast of the Goole project is BBC cameraman Martin Braithwaite with youth and social inclusion support worker Dave Saxton, volunteer Zoe Goddard, social worker in training Lisa Taylor, social inclusion worker Chantal Russell and project development manager Martin Crossland.
