School makes uniform policy U-turn

As students returned back to the Centenary Road facility after the Christmas break, parents were informed that the strict rules for those wearing coats were to be relaxed.
Co-headteacher Danuta Tomasz told the Courier this week that the decision by the governors to allow students to wear a plain black coat instead of the official school one was a genuine response to the economic climate.
She said: “A lot of our parents/carers simply cannot afford to buy two coats: one for school and one for home, regardless of how well-priced they are.
“The governors did not make the decision lightly and it is with great reluctance that they reached the conclusion that it was better to have students in a coat than not in one at all.”
The governors had, she said, aligned the decision with the rest of the school policy where, unless the garment has to have the school logo on, like the sweatshirt, it must be plain black. “Of course students can still wear their logo-ed school coats and we encourage them to do so because we are proud of the corporate look but we have to be realistic.”
Students who came to school wearing any other colour than black would, said Mrs Tomasz, have their coats confiscated and parents/carers would be called to collect them if it happened on a second occasion. “We would like to reiterate that this is not a lessening of our high expectations of our students but a considered response to a situation that is affecting many of our families adversely,” she said.
n GOOLE High School has issued an invite to all last year’s GCSE and A Level students who were unable to attend the recent Presentation Evening, to pick up their certificates.
The awards are available by going in person to the school’s main reception. If a parent or carer attends to pick them up, they must have a letter of authorisation signed by the student.
