Secret POW newspaper project help

ARCHIVE material relating to a remarkable Second World War POW newspaper could be winging its way to an archivist who made a plea for the memorabilia in a recent Courier.

John Reid from Bacup in Lancashire has been contacted by Hillary Price, of Charles Wesley Drive in Brayton, after a plea to trace men who produced a secret newspaper while imprisoned in Germany in 1944.

Mrs Price's father, former RAF navigator Michael Maloney, was interned in Stalag Luft VI where he helped to produce the Yorkshire Post, Kriegie Edition, containing personal anecdotes and information on life in the camp.

The newspaper, subsequently turned into a memorial book, was even read by Winston Churchill and Mr Reid has spent years cataloguing this and other archive material from the war.

Mrs Price said she came across the remarkable Kriegie edition newspaper about four years ago when it was found in her sister's attic and she was glad for the interest in her father and his comrades' remarkable story.

She said: "It's great news someone is putting this remarkable story together.

"I am more than happy to be providing valuable material Mr Reid can use."

Mr Reid said: "I think this is absolutely brilliant. The response from people of the area has been overwhelming."
