Selby holding firm against flood water as tonnes of sand delivered
ONE hundred and 20 tonnes of sand has been delivered to Selby as the town guards itself as possible flooding.
A total of 10,000 bags have been filled with sand so far and stacked onto pallets at the Highways depot on Canal Road, ready to be dispatched.
A Highways spokeswoman said: “Equipment and manpower has been drafted in from other areas across the county to assist the area team with the round the clock operation.
“The efforts will continue into the night with a further 3,000 bags on the way that will be filled and added to the stock pile.”
High tide in Selby today (Thursday) is due at 5.28pm.
The town has so far escaped the flood waters, but there are precautions being put in place for fear the waters will rise.
The army has been drafted in at Cawood as sandbags and flood defences were deployed to halt rising water.
A district council spokesman said: “Water levels peaked along the Ouse at Cawood and Selby in the early hours of the morning, but the flood defences held firm in the majority of areas.
“River levels will continue to fluctuate over the next 24 hours, and the district council, alongside a range of other agencies, remain on stand-by to deploy support when and where it’s needed should any further problems occur.”
Flood waters have hit Birkin and Beal, with some villagers stranded.
