SELFLESS Selby Vision volunteer Michelle Dodgson has not been chosen to be an Olympic Torchbearer.
Michelle, who is registered blind, was nominated by Hazel Calvert, a fellow volunteer at the charity which provides home visiting and other services for blind and partially-sighted people in the district.
Michelle said: “It could only go to one person and it wasn’t me. I’d like to congratulate whoever does get to carry the Olympic torch through Selby. I wish them all the luck.”
The chosen line-up of torchbearers will be revealed next month.
Michelle is a familiar figure in the town with her guide dog Sophie. She sky-dived for charity last autumn and works daily for Selby District Vision as an administrative assistant and fund-raising committee member. She proved herself as one of the region’s top unpaid workers when she was named a recent runner-up in the regional Volunteer of the Year Award.
The Olympic torch passes through the district on June 19. As well as being carried down Gowthorpe, the torch will also be taken through Monk Fryston, Barkston Ash and Camblesforth. The route of the torch’s 70-day UK tour has been planned so that 95 per cent of the country’s population will live within 10 miles of its route.
