Snaith students in search for unique phone box piggy bank
MAKING a call to help raise money for charity are generous students from The Snaith School.
Pupils at the Pontefract Road site are on the look out for an old fashioned red phone box which they hope to turn into a giant piggy bank!
And to help them with their search, three students - Charlotte Ambler, Anna Hinchcliffe and Megan Taylor - were all interviewed on Radio York last Friday.
Sarah Mallinson, Snaith Cluster's Extended Services Coordinator, said: "After hearing on Radio York about ideas of what to do with unused telephone boxes, the students came up with a number of ideas, including: greenhouse, toilet, trophy cabinet, water dispenser and finally, a giant piggy bank."
The radio station featured the chat with the enterprising girls who are now looking to 'adopt' a red telephone box with the aim of raising funds for Cancer Research.
The idea came about following the death of the school's head of drama and Year 7 head Rhoda Baddon last year with cancer.
Sarah said: "As a Business and Enterprise School, our students are used to coming up with enterprising ways to make money, and phone box transformation is just another example of that!
"Students are keen that phone boxes, that are disused due to the prevalence of mobiles phones and are often victim to criminal damage, should be preserved as they are part of our heritage.
"Students are hoping that perhaps one of the phone boxes in the local area that are earmarked for decommissioning might be able to be donated to the school so that it can be restored and then installed within the school so that students and staff can put any loose change into it."
All proceeds would be donated to Cancer Research.
