SNOWY Selby district was a winter wonderland this week as chilly temperatures came to the area.

North Yorkshire County Council has promised extra gritting on the region’s roads as a big freeze is expected to grip the district in the next few days.

Improvement manager for NYCC Transportation and Highways Selby office, Jonathan Wickham, said the mild and wet winter had ensured plenty of grit was still available.

He said a gritting programme of priority one A roads and priority two B roads had been carried out over the past few days, and some priority C roads on particularly vulnerable residential streets and hazardous spots would also be gritted. He said this would continue as forecasters predict temperatures to plummet to minus six or seven degrees and the icy grip to last for a few days.

Mr Wickham added: “We have had gritters going full time over the past few days. We will take another look at the situation and if the weather deteriorates we will look again at the gritting programme.”

Forecaster at RAF Lynton-on-Ouse Bill Reeve said there had been one to two centimetres of snow over the past few days but much of it in the Selby District continued to thaw.

He added: “There has been some snow across North Yorkshire with heavy falls towards the East Coast, Beckonfield and into North Lincolnshire. The snow is not settling in Selby district, but temperatures are predicted to fall and be maintained at minus six or seven today and tomorrow. There’s still snow around but this is at its worst from Humberside to the Scottish borders. We may still get isolated snow showers but no great falls are envisaged.”

An NYCC spokeswoman said: “It will be cold overnight so ice is a problem with freezing snow also a problem on minor untreated roads and footways. We urge people to take care on snow and ice and allow extra journey time and slow down to keep distance to car in front.”

At the time of going to press there were no school closures in Selby district. For more pictures go to www.selbytimes.co.uk website.
