Something special is brewing
A SPECIAL homemade ale, brewed just in time for Christmas, has been made in memory of a former Selby landlady.
Nora Wainman pulled pints for over 50 years and ran the Wheatsheaf Inn at Burn before she passed away aged 95, back on April 7 this year.
Her son Robert followed her wishes for “everyone to have a drink on her” by creating the special brew and giving 150 bottles out to all the special family and friends that had an impact on her life.
He also used his graphic design skills to shape the look of the bottles, giving the tipple the unique name of “Hello! Are You Having a Drink?”, in honour of his late mother’s welcoming charm to customers.
He said: “I thought it should be given an apt name because that’s what people always remember her saying whenever they walked in.
“Even when she was really ill in hospital some friends walked in and immediately she sat up and said ‘Hello, are you having a drink?’
“That was the kind of person she was, with a really welcoming attitude.”
Brewed especially by Keith and Sue at Brown Cow Brewery in Barlow, the drink is a lasting memory of Nora, who was well-respected by the community.
Robert added: “Her wish was that once she’d gone she wanted me to make sure everyone had a drink at Christmas.
“Bringing this drink out just before Christmas means that we can do that now, which would have made her really happy.”
