Tenancies policy call

SELBY District Council is launching a consultation on possible changes to its tenancy policy and wants to know what you think.

The draft policy sets out possible changes to the way the council manages its housing. The consultation lasts from now until February.

Following the consultation, the feedback will be reviewed and the policy updated. It’s expected the new policy will come into effect by summer 2013.

The government has given local authorities the chance to look again at how fair their lettings policies are, and how tenancies are managed.

Among the changes to be consulted on is to offer new tenants shorter tenancies. Existing tenants would not be affected. At the moment, most of the council’s lettings are lifetime (secure) tenancies.

Under the new scheme, most applicants will be offered a five year fixed tenancy. Each five year tenancy will have a 12 month introductory period as now, and then the five year period would start.

SDC deputy leader, Councillor Gillian Ivey said: “We need to hear what people think about these important changes to our Tenancy Policy. There is always a high demand for social housing and we want to make sure that we manage our housing stock in the right way to meet the needs of those on the waiting list.”

In most cases when a tenancy is reviewed, a new five year tenancy will be granted as the size of the household will not have changed.

If for example, there is a large property with only one or two people living there as grown up children have left the home during the tenancy period, support would be offered to find more suitable accommodation for that household. This would then allow the property to be let to a larger family who needs it. These changes would only affect new tenants.

Further information will be available at the following Community Engagement Forum meetings where there will be an information stand about the tenancy policy: January 14, 6.30pm, Riley Smith Hall, Tadcaster; March 5, 6.30pm, Eversley Park Centre, Sherburn in Elmet; March 6, 6.30pm, Brayton Junior School, Brayton; March 13, 6.30pm, Village Hall, North Duffield; March 14, 6.30pm, Drax Sports and Social Club.
