Tenants face housing benefit cut
AHEAD of significant changes to Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit including the controversial bedroom tax, Selby District Council is running a series of drop-in sessions to help people find out more.
The sessions will be run by Access Selby’s Community Officers, and will be a chance for people to ask about how changes to be introduced from April this year could affect them.
Changes to Housing Benefit will mean that those of working age who are deemed to have spare bedroom space will face a cut in the amount of support they receive. The total amount depends on whether you have one or more spare rooms in your home.
The drop-in support sessions are open to anyone who thinks they may be affected, or who wants to find out more:
* Wednesday February 27, 10am-noon: Brotherton Childrens’ Centre:
* Thursday February 28, 10am-noon: Sherburn in Elmet Library.
Council leader, Coun Mark Crane, said: “We’re contacting directly everyone affected by these changes, but we want to ensure you’ve as many opportunities as possible to get all the information you need about these important changes.
“This is part of a national reform to welfare, designed to support a better use of available council and other social housing, to save money nationally and to give greater powers to local councils to deliver Council Tax Support to meet the needs of each area.
“As part of this we’ve had to take some tough decisions about how this support is delivered, but we believe we’ve been as fair and just as possible.”
Information about all these changes is now also available online: www.selby.gov.uk website.
