EXCITEMENT reigned in Rawcliffe Bridge when an alien spaceship landed in the school grounds last week.

It made a hole in the school field and the police and de-contamination experts rushed to the scene.

There was relief all round when it was revealed it was all part of the children’s topic work for this term on the subject of space.

The exercise was the brainchild of Key Stage 2 teacher, Miss Rachel Knight, with help from Years 1 and 2 teacher, Miss Catherine Hobbs.

Headteacher Mrs Hilary Leach said: “They built the spaceship and the caretaker dug the hole for it. We also had a lot of support from the police - who cordoned the area off - and Croda Chemicals - who provided the decontamination suits and smoke machines for effect.”

“It was so realistic that many of the children believed it was all real at first and there was so much commotion with the sirens and smoke machines that some of the local residents wondered what was going on and I had to send a letter home with the children explaining it all!”

The topic had, said Mrs Leach, fitted in well with the children’s science work, English and Design and Technology.
