IT WAS a total white-out this week as families took full advantage of the snowfall making slides and having fun in the icy conditions.
As our pictures show families became daredevils as they took their sledges to Brayton Barff and surrounding areas and revelled in the first significant snowfall this winter.
Up to deadline on Tuesday there had been 18 incidents reported across the county where the severe weather made driving conditions hazardous or meant that roads were blocked for short periods of time. However, there were no accidents reported in Selby district.
During Monday into Tuesday there were 19 collisions. The vast majority of these caused vehicle damage, with only three involving minor injuries, but these were outside the district.
Inspector Mick Barron, of North Yorkshire Police’s Roads Policing Group, said: “I would like to remind drivers to keep up to date with the latest traffic and travel information on local radio and, if conditions are severe, only to travel if the journey is essential.”

Highways Agency improvement manager for Selby district, Jonathan Wickham, said: “We continue to concentrate on gritting major priority one and two A and B roads. There are no major problems and we are now able to start to grit priority three roads including minor highways and rural roads.”
On Monday three schools – Kirk Fenton Primary and Kirk Smeaton Primary schools were closed along with Selby High School, except for years ten and 11. All schools in the district were fully open from Tuesday.
Deputy director of operations at Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust, David Williams, said: “Despite the heavy snowfall our emergency service has been operating effectively and our dedicated staff continue to work extremely hard, making every effort to reach patients as quickly and safely as possible. Although the number of 999 calls has so far been within expected levels, the further snow and icy conditions forecast are likely to cause an increase in demand for our service, particularly for weather-related calls.”
