Top dogs are show winner

WEST Park became a pooch playground on Saturday when the Goole and District branch of the RSPCA held their annual dog show.

A total of 145 entrants took part in nine heats and 670.30 was raised - double the amount of last year according to the organisers.

Results: Best Child Handler - dog Millie, owner Lily; Waggiest Tail - dog Lily, owner Hannah; Prettiest Bitch - dog Cindy, owner Adam; Handsome Male - dog Tig, owner Ben; Cutest Puppy - dog Oscar, owner Sheila; Best Six Legs - dog Maggie, owner Mark; Prettiest Eyes - dog Faye, owner Theresa; Most Lookalike - dog Ruby, owner Pat; Veterans' Class - dog Murphy, owner Ben.

Overall Best in Show was judged by former MP and animal welfare activist, Ian Cawsey. The winner was Lily, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, with her owner Hannah.

Jane Petty of Goole and District RSPCA said: "It was lovely that a Staffordshire Bull Terrier won the Overall Best in Show as we have been trying to promote the fact that Staffies make wonderful pets.

"It is very sad that they have had a bad press in recent times and it is the breed we have the highest number of in our rehoming centres around the country."

She said the branch members were thrilled with the turnout and the amount of money raised which would help them to carry out more work with unwanted, abused or injured animals.

Although the branch supports and works closely with the national charity, it is totally responsible for generating its own funds to help and care for local animals.

In 2009, 438 cats, dogs and rabbits were ID chipped by the branch; 240 cats, dogs and rabbits were neutered; 151 cats, 13 rabbits and nine ducks were taken into foster care and re-homed; and 414 animals were given health checks and veterinary assistance.

The branch holds regular special welfare days when it helps subsidise neutering of cats and dogs and the Goole and District RSPCA can ID chip your dog or cat in your home. Visit www.rspca-goole.co.uk for details.
