Tragic teen’s death in accident horror

A 15-YEAR-old Selby girl has died following a crash on a stretch of road between Chapel Haddlesey and Burn.

Seven other people, including an 18-month-old baby and two girls aged four and five, were injured in the Monday evening smash on the A19.

The crash happened at 8.15pm on a long straight stretch of the road and involved a green Ford Focus and a white Vauxhall Astra.

The Focus was travelling towards Chapel Haddlesey, while the Astra, which had been following a white BMW, was heading towards Burn.

As a result of the collision the as yet unnamed 15-year-old, who was a rear-seat passenger in the Astra, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other people in the car — a 24-year-old woman driver, a 27-year-old man and the baby — were taken to York Hospital with minor injuries.

The 30-year-old man driving the Focus was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Police said he is from Whitley Bridge. Another 30-year-old man and the two young girls, who were passengers in the car, suffered minor injuries.

Traffic Sergeant Dave Willey, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “This is a tragic incident which has left a young girl dead and a man seriously ill in hospital. I urge anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the manner of driving of any of the vehicles prior to the incident to contact the police straight away.”

Glen Williams, chairman of West Haddlesey Parish Council, has issued a plea for the road’s speed limit to be capped at 40mph between Eggborough and Burn to be prevent further accidents.

He said: “We have been campaigning in the area to get the A19 sorted out for many years. It is a long straight road and it isn’t very wide either.

“Most of the A19 should not be 60mph. Any traffic calming measures that can help prevent similar incidents in the area would be welcomed. I think it should be 40mph from Eggborough to Burn. Two vehicles going 60 opposite each other on what is a relatively small road, you are asking for danger.”

Anyone who can help the police with their enquiries should contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, press option two and ask for Martin Hayes.
