Winter weather in Selby District round-up

WINTER: Icy blast.

WINTER: Icy blast.

SNOW, ice and freezing conditions continue to affect roads, schools and businesses across Selby District.

However, despite the weather most schools remain open though some are closed. These include Kirk Fenton and Kirk Smeaton Primary Schools and Selby High School except for years ten and 11.

Roads in the district remain open and gritters are working around the clock to keep major routes free of snow and ice including all main A roads, B roads and some busy C roads and busy footpaths and pavements.

Improvement manager of North Yorkshire Highways Department (Selby division), Jonathan Wickham, said: “There are no particular problems. We have been sending out gritters on all major routes to ensure they remain open across Selby, Tadcaster and Sherburn areas. I urge people to keep checking the NYCC website for updates.”

At 8.17pm on Friday (January 18) the fire service was contacted by the ambulance service to attend a motorcycle crash on the A64 at Sherburn. A fire engine from Sherburn attended. The motorcylist had left the road due to weather conditions. He was suffering from spinal and leg injuries. Fire Crews protected the casualty from the harsh cold and snow until the arrival of the ambulance.

Bus services continue to run as normal with only two Arriva services affected – Selby to Pontefract/Wakefield and Selby to Hensall/Netherton also cancelled.

For full round-up see this week’s Selby Times and keep looking on the website for further updates and information as we get it.
