STUDENTS from Goole High School swapped the classroom for careers recently when they took part in their two week work experience module.

A number of local businesses and organisations including schools, nurseries, builders and retailers opened their doors to the teenagers from Year 10 and offer them an insight into working life.

Liam Anderson enjoyed his time working as a joinery assistant at the East Riding of Yorkshire Council Goole depot so much, that he has returned to do more work in the summer holidays.

His supervisor at the depot, Bill Abdy, said: “Liam worked very well, and we have given him another fortnight’s work.

“We always offer to have a work experience student and give them the opportunity to make something for themselves and Liam made a bird table.

“He also helped to make gates, doors, door frames and much much more. He was very polite, punctual and we could not fault him.”

Mr Abdy explains why he thinks it is vital young people undertake work experience: “The module gives them an insight into what working life is really like. I wish I had been so lucky to have the opportunity to do this as when I started work at the age of 15, I was thrown in at the deep end.”

Goole High School associate headteacher David Flowitt said: “A huge thank you goes out once again to the organisations that have offered placements for our students this year.

“The number of students we had out on work experience was at an all time high despite the struggling economy.

“Not only does the experience gained allow students to develop skills that cannot be developed in the classroom, but it also allows students to experience first hand what it feels like to hold a responsible position in a real organisation.”
