Young reading initiative ends after 14 years of success
LACK of funding means a scheme which helps children who struggle with reading is set to close after 14 successful years.
The Courtyard-based Reading Assistance Teaching Scheme, or RATS as it is known, is a countywide voluntary organisation which develops partnerships to encourage good literacy, numeracy and ICT skills through the enjoyment of books and games.
It currently has 280 volunteers on its books who visit local primary schools and help to nurture young minds and help them with their difficulties.
Founder Lynne Hunter told the Courier this week: "I am very sad it is going.
"We have volunteers who are very dedicated and committed, and have worked so hard.
"The skills they have brought to the scheme have been immense.
"I want to thank them for all their help, we wouldn't have survived without the commitment of the volunteers."
She added: "I would, of course, like to have seen it continue but we just couldn't get the funds.
"We have made a huge difference to a lot of young people."
Among the school's which have benefited from RATS is Hook CoE Primary, headteacher Mrs Janet Huscroft said: "We have found these people incredibly helpful and supportive and they build up wonderful relationships with the children.
