Mixed news in BAE jobs fight

HOPES were dashed among workers from BAE Systems when talks between the Prime Minister and the company’s head this week failed to secure all their jobs.

A total of 54 technical and engineering jobs are to be retained out of the planned 890 facing the axe.

PM David Cameron pledged to meet BAE chief executive Ian King when he met with union representatives in London in December.

He fulfilled that promise with Tuesday’s meeting at which the need to reduce excess capacity in aircraft manufacturing and the implications for the BAE Systems Brough site was discussed.

A statement from Downing Street afterwards saying that Mr Cameron and Mr King had agreed they should continue to work together to minimise the impact on the local community was seen by union members as a sign that the job cuts had been accepted.

Ian Gent, full-time union staff convenor at Brough, said the statement suggested the job cuts had been accepted.

Following the meeting MP for Howden David Davis said: “What the Prime Minister has made clear is that they expect the company to play an active role in minimising the impact of the redundancies on the local community.

“I met with Business Secretary Vince Cable earlier this week to say that at the very least the company should be looking at attracting civil aviation work to the site, which they are in the best place to do with all their contacts and links.

“Mr Cable also stated that he would make it clear to BAE that they had a responsibility to use their knowledge of the industry to bring civil aviation and other engineering work to Brough to preserve the skill base and mitigate any job losses.

“I will be meeting with the BAE Union tomorrow to discuss further.”
