Positive effect on UK coal
Positive Outcomes Training Advisor Bethany Flanagan with Mechanical Supervisor Steve Long.
Workers at UK Coal’s Kellingley Colliery are reaping the rewards of funded training after the firm teamed up with national training provider Positive Outcomes.
Long-term staff who have taken on new roles at the site are being given the chance to train for nationally recognised qualifications with Positive Outcomes and are already impressing management with their new skills.
Steve Long, 54, originally joined the firm as an apprentice in 1975 and is now studying for a Team Leadership NVQ with Positive Outcomes after being promoted to Mechanical Supervisor last October.
As part of his new role, Steve is now assisting Training and Development Manager, Alan Barker, with the organising and delivery of training days onsite, who is delighted with the difference the NVQ is making.
Alan said: “Everything about the role has been new to Steve, so the training has helped him to get to grips with his new work load and the tasks that he is now responsible for.
“The training has been of enormous benefit and I’ve noticed a real difference in Steve; he has become a lot more confident and outgoing with his delivery of information, and his understanding of computers has grown.”
Alan is pleased with the support Positive Outcomes has provided the firm’s learners with, particularly as many haven’t studied for qualifications in some time. He is extremely pleased with the difference the training has made, as he has now witnessed 8 members of staff start awards with Positive Outcomes.
Alan adds: “We are trying to encourage as many employees as possible to train with Positive Outcomes because we believe a person’s age should never hinder further learning, but also because we have been impressed with the service they have given us.
“The quality of the learning, the organisation and professionalism has been excellent.”
Positive Outcomes is one of the country’s top ten independent training providers, offering a range of services, including funded training for full-time employed people, as well as corporate training.
With safety of the utmost importance in the coal industry, delivering information to staff members in a clear manner is essential and this is just one area Positive Outcomes has been able to assist with.
