Village band are top brass!
A BRASS band from Selby district has reason to blow its own trumpet after being crowned national champions.
South Milford Brass (above) came top of the pile in the Second Section of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain to secure the first national title in the band’s 30-year history.
Representing the North of England, South Milford were 16th on stage out of 17 bands at the spectacular in Cheltenham. They performed their interpretation of the Academic Festival Overture by Johannes Brahms.
Keeping nerves in check, the band delivered a fine performance which the adjudicators described as ‘a wonderfully musical performance’ that ‘gave the music space and time’. It secured them first place and the title of Second Section National Brass Band Champions of Great Britain, as well as promotion to the First Section from next January.
Before giving the result, adjudicator Melvin White said: “We waited very nearly all day for a performance of this quality.”
Band secretary Claire Bramley, who won her own trophy as winning secretary, said: “It is a phenomenal achievement to think the band has progressed from non-competing to First Section in about five years. The band’s development is down to each individual player’s contribution and dedication, alongside the determination of the musical director Martin Hall.”
The band, which has a junior section, rehearse on Fridays from 6.30pm-7.15pm. It is on the lookout for sponsors and a permanent home.
