LOANS from Goole Library have increased by over 10,000 in the last year.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council was celebrating a rise of 15,235 issues and 897 active borrowers at the Carlisle Street base.
The figures for the number of books, CDs, DVDs and other items issued revealed that in the 12 months up to March 31 2006 - 99,683 were issued, 4,204 were borrowed and up to March 31 2007 - 114,918 issued and 5,101 borrowed.
The figures reflected record increases across the county with, in the year to April, more than 1.5 million people visiting one of ERYC's branches, travelling or mobile libraries, compared to just over one million the year before.
In the same period, the number of active borrowers rose from 53,711 to April 2006 to 69,850 in April 2007.
Alan Moir, libraries, arts and heritage group manager, said: "These are very good results, with increases in visits, issues, numbers of readers and use of digital services.
"The investment that the council has made in new stock, improved buildings and mobile libraries is really paying off."
He added: "For a number of years we have been hearing that public libraries, books and reading are going out of fashion, but here in the East Riding that is clearly not the case.
"I am particularly pleased for library staff and supportive of colleagues in the council whose hard work to improve and promote the library service is now bearing fruit in an impressive manner."
In recent years, the ERYC have spent hundreds of thousands of pounds on improving library buildings, as well as buying new books and enabling public access computers.
On-line services allow members to browse the East Riding library catalogue, make free reservations and access respected reference services through the council's website.
Older people can also now get their bus pass from East Riding libraries.
