Charter hold out to take home cup
AFC Charter 3
Sutton Rovers 2
CHARTER had just a full day to recover from their Goole and Thorne Cup semi-final win before facing Sutton in the final at Hatfield Main's ground.
And the Goole team went a goal down on ten minutes to a fine volley which gave 'keeper Hall no chance.
But Charter started to perform to their potential and gained a penalty when one of the Sutton players hand balled a goal bound effort.
Constable made no mistake from the spot sending the 'keeper the wrong way.
The young Sutton side though hit back when Charter failed to clear their lines and the ginger haired striker volleyed home from an acute angle.
Charter's never say die attitude though saw them go straight back up field and equalise with the goal of the game from Rob Constable.
After a flowing move from end to end, Constable received the ball from 20 yards out and rifled the ball home to level.
Constable then beat a Sutton player to the ball as he was shielding it out of play after Jackson had played the ball into the box.
And the midfield general wrapped his foot round the ball to fire home from a tight angle to give his side the lead and complete a first half hat-trick.
The second half saw Sutton attack but found Charter's back line of Fallon, Harrison, Costello and Blanchard in superb form.
One tackle too many by Fallon resulted in injury so he was replaced by Hoare who was very unfortunate not to start the game after yet again having another outstanding season.
Goalkeeper Hall was kept on his toes and coped with ease but Charter looked tired.
Wheldrake, who had run himself into the ground in both games, was replaced by Johnson who gave Charter more energy down the wing.
The front pair of Gill and Jackson chased every lost cause and did not giving Sutton chance to hit the long ball.
Sutton then had a break through, with only seconds left, but a great point blank save from Hall denied them the equaliser.
Charter held out to lift the trophy for the fourth time, three under their new name.
Man of the match went to the hat-trick hero Rob Constable.
