LESS than two years after taking up the sport, Goole teenager Megan Garland is swinging her way to success on the golf course.
In a meteoric rise to posting low scores, the modest 14-year-old, has had her handicap slashed from 25 to ten in just one season and is already representing the county.

Proud dad Martin, who plays off a four handicap, said she originally came along some 18 months ago to keep him company at Selby Golf Club, but took to the game like a duck to water.

He said that in reality she was currently playing to a five or six – but handicaps can't be changed during the winter months.

Megan, of West Park Side, has received coaching at The Oaks, near Bubwith, and now plays for the Yorkshire Girls' Elite Squad and was playing at Selby against the Leeds Union boys' team as we went to press yesterday.

"We are exceptionally proud, especially with her playing for the county," said Martin. "She also played in the national girls' championships in London last year, which was good experience even though she didn't qualify."

A pupil at Vermuyden School, she hits the ball a long way for her age – some 220 yards – but as her dad points out, there is so much more to the game nowadays including diet, fitness and weight training.

"But I don't want to put her under too much pressure."
