NETTING a place in the final six of a prestigious award ceremony is Goole Tennis Centre.
The Westfield Banks facility, which was recently chosen as the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) Club of the Year, has been nominated for the CCPR (Central Council for Physical Recreation) Sports Club of the Year 2008.

The 12-year-old club beat off competition from 150,000 others countrywide to be whittled down to the final six and represenatives will travel to London on Tuesday in the hopes of scooping the £6,000 first prize.

The winner will receive the award from the Minister for Sport, Gerry Sutcliffe, and former British Lion rugby prop-foward Jason Leonard.

Tennis development officer Tim Pattle, who started at the club in January, told the Courier: "We're up against clubs representing fencing, judo, netball, volleyball and table tennis.

"This is the first time we've been nominated and, if we win, the money will be put back into the club and into developing community sport.

"This nomination just shows how far the club's come over the past 18 months.

"Head coach Steve Turnbull has been here about 15 or 16 months and this has really been down to him and the amount of work he has done.

"We are coaching in seven or eight other clubs around the area, as well as in Goole, so our programme hits about 400 kids."

Goole Tennis Centre has nine courts, indoor and out.
