POWERLIFTER, Tony Stevenson, has won his way through to two national competitions after success at last weekend's divisional qualifier in Ashington.
The 50-year-old from Lodge Lane, West Cowick, earned his place in the Great Britain Powerlifting Federation (GBPF) national event in Ackrington at the end of this month, as well as the British Bench Press National Championships, in Colchester in April, after taking first place in the 50 plus category a week last Saturday.
Weighing in at 86.5kilos, he competed in the 90kg class and bench-pressed 170 kilos - five more than at the last event he attended. He also achieved a 250 kilo squat; and a 210 kilo dead lift, just missing out on a 220 kilo lift.
Tony, a voluntary worker at Snaith Hall residential home, said he had been weightlifting for 30 years and was thrilled with his success. "I am buzzing and can't wait for the two national competitions," he said.
